LaFleur Finding His Identity as a Head Coach

Through Matt LaFleur’s short tenure in Green Bay, he has projected himself as a very even-keeled coach. However, every coach has expectations and LaFleur is no different. When those expectations aren’t met tensions rise.

During yesterday’s training camp practice running back Tra Carson got into a scuffle with safety Josh Jones. Jones has had a strong start after requesting a trade via his agent just two months ago.

Following the incident, LaFleur came down hard on the third-year safety sidelining him for the remainder of practice.

“I told him to get out at that particular moment,” said LaFleur. “That’s not what we want to be about, we’ve got to take care of our teammates.”

LaFleur later followed up by saying the team has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to fighting.

On Tuesday, LaFleur voiced his displeasure with the offense which has gotten off to a slower start than the defense thus far. He was clearly not happy with a Davante Adams fumble in particular during the two-minute period.

LaFleur has implemented an up-tempo practice philosophy so far with loud music and a fast-paced environment. However, he felt the offense was a tad sluggish and sloppy.

“We’ve got to operate with more urgency, just in and out of the huddle” he said. “I don’t want to have to condition these guys after practice, I’d rather that practice time be spent for meaningful reps. The conditioning should be in practice, hustling from drill to drill, in and out of the huddle, and just practicing with a purpose. “

He also claimed there was “a lot of room for improvement” in terms of the team’s overall effort and cleaning up things in their control such as penalties.

Of course we have yet to see how LaFleur operates as a play-caller but that will happen very soon. At least for now we have comfort in knowing he can rule with an iron fist.
