After their Week 1 debacle at the hands of the New Orleans Saints, the Green Bay Packers have corrected their missteps and ran their winning streak to five in a row heading into Sunday’s home matchup against the Washington Football Team. And after key defensive stops and a sterling offensive performance by Aaron Rodgers, that streak is now six.

Having welcomed a much-maligned NFC East team into Lambeau Field, acting as a bit of closure for starting QB Taylor Heinicke, whose late father was a big-time Green Bay fan and who shared that love with Heinicke before his passing in 2011. For Heinicke, he was one of the few bright spots for WFT in Week 7, as they suffered costly red-zone turnovers and let the game slip away on multiple occasions.

It was a bit of a slower start for both teams, as the scoreboard showed 14-7 Green Bay heading into halftime.

The Packers got on the board first on the arm of Rodgers, as he connected with Davante Adams for a 17-yard score for the game’s first points. Washington matched that on their next drive, producing an eight-play drive that saw Heinicke connect with Terry McLaurin for a 40-yard TD, beating rookie CB Eric Stokes.

With both teams having suffered blocked field goals on consecutive drives, it was Green Bay who produced the final points of the first half. Rodgers found Allen Lazard from 10 yards out – Lazard caught five balls alone on this drive, finishing the game with five receptions for 60 yards and the lone score.

Coming out of half, Green Bay decided to help celebrate National Tight Ends Day the right way, helping Robert Tonyan put up one of his best showings of the year. Four receptions for 63 yards and a TD on the team’s first drive of the second half helped open the game up and hopefully is a sign of things to come for a struggling player this year.

Both teams traded field goals in the fourth quarter, and that was all she wrote for scoring purposes.

Green Bay’s defense came to play today when it mattered the most, forcing a fumble and an interception of Heinicke, as well as two consecutive drives that saw WFT turn the ball over inside the five-yard line of Green Bay. Constant pressure from Rashan Gary and company, solid tackling by De’Vondre Campbell, and solid coverage in lieu of Jaire Alexander and Kevin King suiting up all played a part in earning their sixth win of the year.

Next up for Green Bay is a short week against the lone undefeated team in the league, as the Packers will travel to Glendale to face the red-hot Arizona Cardinals. As the defense let Heinicke run wild on them, it will be key to shut down Kyler Murray on the ground if they want to end AZ’s winning streak.
