Even on July 10th, a lot remains to be seen on how the Packers Quarterback situation will unfold. We currently are two months away from Week 1, which is September 12th. Today, we ask who is likely to take the Packers 3rd QB spot, if Green Bay elects to carry 3 Quarterbacks.
Scenario 1: Aaron Rodgers is Back
If Aaron Rodgers is back, it is a sure-fire lock that Rodgers will be QB1 and Jordan Love will be QB2. Last season, the Packers carried 2 QB’s on the active roster with Rodgers and Tim Boyle, who signed with the Lions in the off-season. They definitely could do the same thing in 2021, with only carrying 2 QB’s on gameday. If not, the likely QB 3, in order, would be:
- Blake Bortles – An established veteran, who is going into his 8th NFL season. Bortles has started 73 NFL games in his career and was the starter for the 2017 Jacksonville Jaguars, who made the AFC Championship Game
- Kurt Benkert – The former University of Virginia Quarterback has performed well enough in the offseason to earn an opportunity in Training Camp. Benkert, 25, spent the last 3 seasons in the Atlanta Falcons organization.
3) Jake Dolegala – The 2019 undrafted free agent from Central Connecticut State University has a chance to be a Packer. Dolegala, who set school records in college for passing yards (8,129) and touchdowns (48) has spent time with the New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals. Dolegala has imposing size, even for a Quarterback, at 6’7 and 240 pounds.
Scenario 2: Jordan Love is Starter
If Jordan Love is the starting QB Week 1, that means Blake Bortles would very likely be QB2 with his veteran presence. I believe the Packers would be locks to carry 3 Quarterbacks on gameday in this scenario, either electing to go with either Benkert or Dolegala, or trade for another QB, like Gardner Minshew or Teddy Bridgewater.
