Aaron Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers’ veteran quarterback, was named the AP NFL Most Valuable Player at the 2021/22 season NFL Honors gala held recently.
His acceptance speech after collecting the award has attracted a lot of attention from the media and fans alike. There are mixed reactions all over, and the next move Rodgers takes is certainly going to be an important one.
“Well, I’ve got some decisions to make, for sure. Yesterday was like the first day that kind of felt like the offseason. I had a couple of things I had to do before I got back to the West Coast, and then actually I was out in Scottsdale (Arizona) yesterday. So I’m going to enjoy the next couple of weeks. I’ve had good conversations with Green Bay. I’ll do some contemplating and make a decision here pretty quick.”
“It’s been an amazing 17 years. So thankful for the memories and the moments over the years.” The former Super Bowl MVP added. His speech has caused a lot of anxiety throughout the NFL fraternity, with many super sleuths coming up with all sorts of interpretations. Rodgers hasn’t made it official yet. But, according to his latest remarks, it would suddenly be somewhat surprising if he requested a move this summer.
We can’t rule out the possibility of retiring. However, Rodgers has stated that a large part of his decision would be based on whether he feels he can keep playing at a high level. Back-to-back MVPs indicates that there is still plenty of petrol in the tank.
His statements drove Packers Twitter into a frenzy that night. Everyone was analyzing every word. Rodgers specifically praised Brian Gutekunst, Russ Ball, and Mark Murphy in his remarks. Since his postgame news conference after the playoff defeat to the San Francisco 49ers, he’s been addressing Gutekunst more frequently. He was asked how the connection developed over the course of the year.
Rodgers has stated that he will make his decision soon, and he has suggested the franchise-tag window as a likely timeline. Given that it would tie into Davante Adams’ future with the Packers – something that would appear to be a must for Rodgers’ return. No matter what step he takes, the next NFL season promises to be action-packed as teams (including Packers) will be making reinforcements for different positions. Matches can be wagered on Betway, where tens of markets will be made available.
While they wait for Rodgers to make a decision, the Packers have made it obvious that they want him back. While it seems apparent that any franchise in their position would not want to make any mistakes, the Packers’ aggressively public approach also suggests something else. They learned from the infamous Brett Favre divorce in 2008 and wouldn’t want to lose again in the court of public opinion.
Packers president Mark Murphy oversaw the difficult Favre-to-Rodgers transfer. At the time, GM Brian Gutekunst was an area scout, although he worked under Ted Thompson, the team’s then-GM. In the summer of 2008, Thompson and Murphy were publicly declared public enemies. A significant section of the Packers fanbase felt that the franchise was wrong not to allow Favre to return to the team when he came back from retirement.
They essentially took the burden to Rodgers by making it apparent that he wants to end his career with the Packers. If he retires or chooses to play for another club, the Packers will be in a position to declare that they did everything possible to keep him.
