Wisconsin’s Green Bay Packers are a team with a great history in the NFL. Coming from humble beginnings, they joined what was then the American Professional Football Association in 1921 and went on to have great success in their early years which included multiple NFL championships. They were also winners of the first two Super Bowls, giving ample opportunity for Sports Betting in Canada ahead of both events.

Today, the Packers have an extremely dedicated and loyal fanbase who have seen their team enjoy great success over the years. Let’s take a look at some of the team’s greatest all-time moments.

Founding & Early Success

The Packers were founded in 1919 by their legendary first coach, Curly Lambeau along with George Whitney Calhoun. After joining the American Professional Football Association in 1921, they enjoyed some great success that included six NFL championships from 1929 to 1944.

The 50s were definitely a leaner period for the Packers, with them failing to win any championships. However several important players did emerge during this time who would go on to be part of the legendary Vince Lombardi era.

Vince Lombardi Joins

Vince Lombardi is considered one of the greatest NFL coaches of all time. He first joined the Packers in 1959 and led them to an era of incredible success that included five NFL championships. Part of this incredible success included the Packers winning the first two Super Bowls held in 1967 and 68.

Unfortunately, Lombardi would lose his battle to cancer not long after, but it’s a testament to his legendary status in the game that when he passed away in 1970, the decision was made to name the Super Bowl trophy after him.

Super Bowl I

Super Bowl I was a historic event and the first time that teams from the NFL and AFL faced each other in a championship game. The Packers took on the Kansas City Chiefs and although the Chiefs were a formidable opponent, the Packers were able to establish an early lead of 14-0 in the first quarter.

The Chiefs put up a good fight and looked like they might be coming back in the second quarter but ultimately the Packers were too dominant and were able to ultimately win the game 35-10.

The Packers also went on to win the following year’s Super Bowl in 1968, where they beat Oakland Raiders 33-14.

The Ice Bowl

Coming off the back of their very first Super Bowl win at the start of the year, the Packers were looking to win their third consecutive title when they faced the Dallas Cowboys in the 1967 NFL Championship game, also known as ‘The Ice Bowl’.

It was so named due to the fact that it was played in incredibly harsh conditions, where the frozen turf and ice made it extremely difficult for the players on the field. The Packers were ultimately able to overcome the Cowboys thanks to Bart Starr’s touchdown in the final moments of the game, with the Packers ultimately winning 21-17.

The Ice Bowl was the coldest game in NFL history and is considered by many to be the most famous game in the sport, even including Super Bowls.

Brett Farve Era

Despite their incredible success in the 60s, the 70s and 80s saw a downturn in the Packers’ fortunes. This all changed in the 90s though, in no small part due to legendary quarterback, Brett Favre

Favre joined the Packers in February 1992 and went on to play for them for 16 seasons. He enjoyed great success as part of the Packers lineup that included three consecutive MVP awards and two Super Bowl appearances, with the Packers winning Super Bowl XXXI.

Super Bowl XLV

The Packers’ most recent Super Bowl success was at Super Bowl XLV in 2011, where they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25.

The Packers had an incredibly dominant start in the game, establishing a 21-3 lead by halftime. However, the Steelers came back into it in the second half and managed to cut the Packers’ lead down to just 3 points at one stage. Ultimately though, the Packers were able to see the game out and pick up their fourth Super Bowl trophy.

Winning Super Bowl XLV was the first time the Packers had won the tournament since 1997, when Brett Favre led them to victory at Super Bowl XXXI.

The Green Bay Packers have had an incredible history with many great moments as you can see. Although the last decade hasn’t been as fruitful as some others in terms of championships, they’re still a very competitive team with some fantastic players.
