The Packers brought in some much needed help at the safety position last week by signing veteran safety Jonathan Owens. Owens, who had previously played for the Texans, will bring some added depth to a young, inexperienced safety position for the Packers.
Here is a look at the Packers newest safety.
What to know About Owens
Owens went to Missouri Western State University, where he played division two football. He played from 2014-2017, redshirting his first year there.
He went un-drafted in the 2018 NFL Draft and signed as a free agent with the Arizona Cardinals.
Owens spent the entire season on injured reserve though after tearing his ACL during OTAs and was cut by the Cardinals in 2019.
Owens signed with the Houston Texans in September of 2019 and has been there until this past season.
He spent the first three seasons shifting between the practice squad and active roster, including being cut by the Texans three times.
During his four seasons with the Texans, Owens played in 31 games with 19 starts, recording 141 tackles and an interception.
Last season was his biggest season stat-wise for the 5th year pro, he set career marks across the board with 17 games started, 125 tackles and 84 solo tackles. His 125 tackles were tied for 21st in the NFL and were second on the team.
Owens is also married to Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles.
The two met in March of 2020 and got married last month before having a ceremony for their wedding just couple of weeks ago.
What Owens can do to help the Packers
Owens will help the team with his experience as the Packers come into the 2023 season with only 3 safeties with playing experience.
Darnell Savage will likely start at the free safety position, although he will be facing some tough competition with Rudy Ford possibly assuming that role as well.
Ford started a couple games last year at free safety while Savage was benched for parts of last year.
Meanwhile, Owens will be in line to be the starting strong safety.
Adrian Amos had been the team’s starter at strong safety for the past four years, but the Packers haven’t re-signed him this offseason. Amos remains a free agent.
Owens will look to continue his great success his had last year with the Texans, as he starts a new chapter with the Packers in 2023.——————
