The Packers offensive line is playing well. The group up front is holding steady and deserves a tip of the cap for their recent play. Entering the 2024 season, the Packers had a few questions on the offensive line. It was uncertain who would become the starting RG. LT Rasheed Walker impressed in 2023 but it was not guaranteed he would play well in 2024. Through 10 games, the big guys up front for Green Bay are leading the way.
The Packers offensive line has started to take shape. Sean Rhyan has emerged as the guy at the right guard position. Rookie first round pick Jordan Morgan’s injury status has allowed Rhyan to grab control of this position. That being said, Rhyan has capitalized on his opportunities. Rhyan excels in the running block game but over the past few weeks, he has improved as pass blocker.
The Packers held up well against a tough Chicago Bears defense last Sunday. The Bears recorded one sack against the Packers. So far in 2024, the Packers are rated #1 by PFF and #2 by SIS in pass protection. The ability for the Packers offensive line to provide time for QB Jordan Love is critical for the type of offensive Green Bay wants to run. LaFleur loves to push the ball down field. The Packers rank 6th in the NFL in explosive plays so giving Love and the Packers WR time is a key ingredient to a successful offense.
The Play of the Big Guys Will Determine Green Bay’s Ceiling
On Wednesday, Packers QB Jordan Love told the media that this is the best he has felt all year. WR Jayden Reed agreed with Love and said “that’s gonna be great for our offensive moving forward.” With Love’s health returning to normal, it will allow him to play with more confidence. It is no secret that the Packers 2024 ceiling rides on the play of Jordan Love who needs to limit the mistakes. His overthrow INT Sunday kept the Bears in the game. The Packers had a chance to make it a two score lead but his INT revived the Bears. If the o-line can continue to keep Love upright, his play will improve.
On top of giving Love time, the offensive line’s ability to create holes for Josh Jacobs will be just as effective for the offense. The Sean Rhyan and Zach Tom double team block paved a few holes large enough for a semi truck to drive through against the Bears. Jacobs ability to fight for yards after contact already makes it difficult for opposing defenses to bring him down. If the offensive line can continue to move people in the running game, Jacobs will continue to be a menace.
The upcoming schedule presents a tough, physical stretch for Green Bay. San Francisco and Detroit love to play a physical style of football. Expect the Packers offensive line to match that intensity. If they can go toe to toe with the Lions and 49ers intimidating defensive fronts, the Packers offense will benefit. The key for the Packers offense to catch fire like they did in the second half of the 2023 season will be the level of play from the big guys up front.
