Packers WR Romeo Doubs is set to be a free agent when free agency starts on March 9th. Recently, there has been rumblings that both the Packers and Romeo Doubs have mutual interest to agree to extension. It makes some sense for the Packers to extend Romeo Doubs but the most logical move is for the Packers to let Doubs walk in free agency. The Packer have younger receivers in the waiting and Doubs’ potential new cap hit would be too expensive to take on.
Romeo Doubs has been the Packers most consistent wide receiver, health wise, the past two seasons. Despite a few concussions, he plays more often than not. Reed, Watson, and Wicks have battled injuries the majority of their career. Plus Matthew Golden and Savion Williams both dealt with the injury bug in their rookie season. Additionally, Jordan Love seems to trust Doubs and their relationships seems to be quite strong.
On top of that, Doubs is beloved by his teammates and his coaches. He seems to be a locker room favorite so the reports of the Packers and Doubs having mutual interest in working on an extension do make sense. However, Doubs is projected to receive an 8 figure a year type contract on the open market. The Packers would be smart to use that cap space elsewhere. These reports might be a strategic play by Green Bay. A big payday for Doubs would land the team a compensatory draft pick.
Romeo Doubs Will Not Be Back

Green Bay will be in thia position with their wide receivers for the next few years. Doubs is a free agent right now. Watson, Reed, and Wicks will be free agents after the 2026 season, unless they agree to an extension. The Packers group of wide receivers is filled with potential but outside of Christian Watson, no one has not really exploded. Watson is the one clear receiver who is worthy of an extension which is why it is likely the Packers focus on paying Watson instead of Doubs.
It is clear that Jayden Reed is a critical piece to this puzzle as well. Reed brings a different skillset to the table than Doubs. The Packers most likely prefer to keep Reed over Doubs because Reed adds a slot like, yards after catch flare to the offense. Watson can handle the Doubs like role and his speed can take that role to the next level. The final reason why it is unlikely for Doubs to return to Green Bay is Matthew Golden. There is no doubt that Golden’s rookie season was a frustrating one. However, in his limited time, it is very obvious that he can play and if Doubs signs elsewhere, it clears the roadblock for Golden to see the field more.
Romeo Doubs is a player that Green Bay would keep in a heartbeat. However, with their current roster construction, it makes little sense to extend him. The Packers need to send their money on other positions and quite frankly, they need to spend the allocated wide receiver money on Christian Watson. Green Bay has the horses in the barn that can replace Doubs so much so that one of those horses might end up being a much better player.
