The running back position might be a sneaky need for the Packers.
They’re good for this season but for future seasons, it seems murky.
Considering the Packers lost Emanuel Wilson in Free agency and didn’t signed another running back, the potential is there.
Of course the Packers have Josh Jacobs, who is their lead back.
He is signed through the 2027 season.
Chris Brooks would be the number two back behind Jacobs.
Brooks is more known for his blocking and pass protection abilities.
Then there is Marshawn Lloyd who might be the most interesting option.
That is if he can stay healthy.
In the short term, no the need isn’t there.
Jacobs can carry the load as the workhorse back as he’s always done.
Brooks has proven he can be the third down back.
Meanwhile with Llyod, it is a mystery.
The Packers could very well let go of Lloyd if he cannot stay healthy or on the feild.
Long term

In the long term, there is a moderate to high need for the Packers at Running back.
But his cap number at that point would be over 16 million.
There is also concern about his production after lower than expected numbers in 2025.
Jacobs rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2024, setting up high expectations for 2025.
But Jacobs only rushed for 939 yards in 2025.
Part of that could be due to the changes on the offensive line.
But for a guy who has over 2,000 touches in his career, the wear and tear on Jacobs might be showing.
It is entirely possible for the Packers to move on from Jacobs this next offseason.
But the question would be who would take his place?
Chances of drafting a running back in 2026
The chances of the Packers drafting a RB this year is moderate.
The Packers don’t quite have an insurence plan for Jacobs if they do decide to move on from him.
Llyod was supposed to be the insurance plan.
But with the inconsistent time on the field the Packers may cut Lloyd at some point.
There are some intriguing options if the Packers decide to draft one in this years draft.
Although with no 1st round pick the Packers may have to settle for a day two draft pick for a Running Back.
Some of the potential options when the Packers pick on day 2 include:
- Mike Washington Jr. -Arkansas
Emmett Johnson – Nebraska
Nick Singleton – Penn State
Kaelon Black – Indiana
While all are options, the Packers could very easily wait until next year to draft an RB.
