It wouldn’t be the NFL offseason if Pro Football Focus wasn’t churning out bad football takes on a regular basis.
In a Monday post on Twitter, the football analytics site posed the question of which wide receiver is the best in the NFC North? The first analyst said it was Detroit Lions wideout, Kenny Golladay. Another analyst agreed. Then another mentioned fellow Detroit wide receiver, Marvin Jones, while the last guy brought up Minnesota’s Adam Thielen.
Did Davante Adams fall off a cliff?
Adams’ name wasn’t mentioned until the final five seconds of the video posted on PFF’s Twitter account. Even then, the consensus was that Adams was only “one of the best.”
Here we are in 2020 and Adams is still being overlooked and underrated. Very few receivers in the entire league have been as dominant as Adams has over the last few seasons. Since 2016, no receiver has caught more touchdowns than Adams. The Packers number one wideout also ranks in the top 10 in receiving yards, targets, and receptions during that span.
Last year, Adams was headed for another outstanding season before a toe injury robbed him of four games. However, despite having to sit out a quarter of the season, he hauled in 83 receptions for 997 yards and five touchdowns. All while being named to his third consecutive Pro Bowl.
Meanwhile, Golladay also saw a tremendous output last season. The former third-round pick for Detroit led the league in receiving touchdowns and posted a career-high 1,190 receiving yards. Thus, earning him his first invite to the Pro Bowl.
Comparing Golladay and Adams might like comparing apples to apples to some, but Adams still needs to get his due even after years of utter domination. He’s arguably the best wide receiver off the line of scrimmage in the NFL. In contested-catch situations, he’s one of the most trustworthy. Not to mention, he doesn’t have the luxury of having a solid number two receiver alongside him like Golladay has in Jones. The same can be said for Thielen who has had Stefon Diggs as a running mate for the last five seasons.
Adams has yet to respond to PFF’s latest take, but it would not be surprising if he did soon. The Packers star wideout is constantly seeking added motivation, and this could serve as fuel for the fire.
