It was great to finally be at a football game last night. Living in Nashville, I follow the Titans closely and cheer for them to do well. They’ve allowed roughly 10-15% capacity for most of the season and on Thursday night, I was fortunate enough to be in the stands (last row upper deck) in the Colts vs. Titans game.

The game was good until it wasn’t. As the Titans slowly dripped down their pants and saw a 17-13 halftime lead slip away in the Tennessee night into a 34-17 loss, observers had to recognize the obvious: the atrocious special teams performance by the Titans. The avalanche of mistakes was punctuated by Stephen Gostkowski’s 8th missed field goal of the season, a 44 yarder that fluttered wide right in the 4th quarter and sealed the deal on losses for the Titans and my live bets.

In a league where kicking is constantly taken for granted and usually only brings attention when a kicker screwing up, Mason Crosby continues to quietly go about his business and put the Packers in positions to win football games week in and week out.

Crosby was drafted by the Packers in 2007. He’s playing his 14th season in the Green and Yellow, and even though the hair has greyed on his head, it hasn’t gone to his legs. The 36 year old from the University of Colorado is a perfect 11-11 on field goals this season and was 22-24 on field goals in 2019.

Mr. Consistency is Mason Crosby. Through out the years, he’s made huge kicks, such as the game winning field goal against the Eagles in 2007 in his 1st NFL game, or the game-tying field goal in the 2014 NFC Championship game to force overtime. Additionally, Crosby has had monster days. Remember in 2015 when Packers nation was having a meltdown, and the Packers had to travel to the University of Minnesota to play the Vikings on a cold Sunday afternoon in November? (James Jones hoodie game)

Crosby went 5-5, hitting field goals from 42,47,40,42 and 52 in 30 degree temperatures. In 2020, Mr. Consistency is also 28-29 on 33 yard field goals this season, also known as extra points. In a year where the Packers have rightfully had headlines focused on their dynamic offense and the resurgence of Aaron Rodgers, Crosby deserves his fair share of credit as well, consistently delivering 1 and 3 points at a time for the Packers at almost every opportunity.

I figured now was the time to write about this, as my girlfriend is a diehard Jacksonville Jaguars fan and has a soft spot in her heart for kickers. So much so, I got her a Josh Lambo (Jaguars kicker) jersey for Christmas last year. Bummed that we couldn’t make the trip to Lambeau this year with her Lambo Jags jersey but such is life. (FWIW, Josh Lambo is out this Sunday because of injury).

If Lambo can hang around the league as long as Crosby, we may just be lucky enough to realize our dreams in the 2028 Jags vs. Packers matchup in Green Bay. For now though, I’ll continue to appreciate Mason Crosby, as the savvy veteran continues to deliver excellence in his 14th season with the Packers.
