Expect the Packers to trade the 29th pick

The 2021 NFL Draft is fast-approaching. At this point and time next week, we’ll be two days away from settling into our comfiest recliner with some popcorn, waiting to see what type of drama goes down in this year’s draft. We’ll also be waiting for a while to see what happens with the 29th pick.

While everybody continues to make their predictions about who the team in Titletown will pick at slot No. 29, I just want to put this notion out in the water – don’t be shocked if the Packers aren’t the team drafting 29th.

Now, I know I’m not the first one making this point. However, it just wouldn’t shock me to see the Packers move up – or down – in the 2021 draft.

General Manager Brian Gutekunst hasn’t been shy about his willingness to move around in the first few years of his tenure. He’s made day one draft trades in all three of his first three years.

In 2018, he traded from No. 27 to No. 18 to pick cornerback Jaire Alexander. In 2019, he traded from the 30th pick to the 21st to pick safety Darnell Savage.

His most shocking, of course, was the 2020 draft – where he traded up to the 26th pick from the 30th overall pick to draft Aaron Rodgers’ potential successor, Jordan Love.

The fact that Gutekunst made this move, out of all the moves, tells us fans that he really doesn’t give a hoot about what we think. It’s all about what he, and the rest of management, feels is the best move for the organization and its future.

With that being said, if he has the stones to make that move, he has the stones to make any move.

While I know that he’s primarily traded up to get his guy, it also wouldn’t shock me to see the Packers make a move down and acquire more draft capital. Before Gutekunst took over as the GM, it was a popular move to do exactly that in Green Bay.

All I know is that if the Green Bay Packers are still at pick No. 29 when it’s finally time to make the selection, I will be shocked.

If we let the past be our guide, expect Gutekunst to be a busy man on the phone on April 29.
