Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur announced that backup QB Jordan Love will start the preseason opener vs. the San Francisco 49ers on Friday night.

Love will be entering his third season with Green Bay after being drafted 26th overall by the Packers in 2020. Through his first two full seasons, Love has seen limited time in regular season games. When he has seen the field, the results have been subpar at best.

After not seeing regular season action in 2020, the first rounder appeared in six games in 2021. Of that, his notable playing time came in a week 9 start at Kansas City, and a week 18 mop up role at Detroit.

In Love’s first career start, he stepped in for Aaron Rodgers who had tested positive for COVID-19. His 19-34 performance for 190 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT left a lot to be desired.

Love will certainly welcome as many reps with the first team as he can get as he enters a pivotal time in his development.

It was no surprise to learn the backup quarterback will receive the reps to start the preseason campaign for Green Bay. The question arises though as to how much time will back to back MVP Aaron Rodgers see this preseason. Admits a myriad of drama and controversy last preseason, the future HOFer didn’t play at all prior to the opening kickoff of the regular season.

Following a training camp and preseason of not seeing the field and not getting in reps, Rodgers and the Packers offense put out a dud in week one last season. The Packers got thumped 38-3 in New Orleans to the Jameis Winston led Saints.

Friday marks the start to the Packers preseason schedule. In their first action since the heart breaking playoff loss in January, Green Bay will start 2022 with the same team that ended their 2021 campaign. A sort of ironic start to the fresh season, and hopefully an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start anew.
