For 3 years now we’ve incessantly heard about the Packers’ status as the youngest team in football. It’s been the underlying theme of the Jordan Love era. The talent they have as a team has been obvious, but it hasn’t translated to playoff success quite yet. This year though, was really starting to feel different. That was the case up until the team had to make a depressing and costly trip to Denver, CO. Injuries to major players in that game have somewhat dampened my hopes for the 2025 season’s outcome, but I refuse to give up on my pipe dreams entirely. I’d like to note that the foremost reason for my persevering hope is Jordan Love. With the way that he is playing right now, Jordan Love will always give the Green Bay Packers a chance.
For over a decade we saw Packers teams make the playoffs and put up a fight with embarrassingly thin rosters. Does anybody remember when Letroy Guion took snaps at OG in the 2016 NFC Championship Game? How about the year when hoodie James Jones was the team’s primary pass catcher, and when Jeff Janis was playing key snaps in playoff games? Long story short, those rosters were chock full of deficiencies. We all knew it.
Those teams were good for pretty much one reason only. That was Aaron Rodgers. He had the power to play so well that it masked all of those deficiencies. It didn’t matter if the Green Bay defense couldn’t stop a soul. We had Aaron Rodgers. It didn’t matter if they couldn’t run the ball to save their lives, they could just throw it with Aaron Rodgers. Who cared if the Packers were thoroughly outmatched in the trenches, Aaron Rodgers would make it all okay! And he did. At least, most of the time he did.
The Green Bay Packers of 2025 will need Jordan Love to have a similar effect the rest of the way. And it will need to start today.
To start, the Packers will likely be outmatched in the trenches today. The Bears sport what is arguably the best offensive line in the league. They spent a whole heap of money on their line this offseason, and it shows. The Packers on the other hand, have not been near as good. The interior has shown promise, but has been consistently leaky. Rasheed Walker has not been playing great ball as of late, he leads the team with 23 pressures allowed this year, and Zach Tom will likely miss this game. Compound this upon the fact that Josh Jacobs will also likely miss today’s game, and it becomes a distasteful recipe for a tough day on the ground.
The Green Bay Packers defensive line is equally as tarnished. Rashan Gary hasn’t had a single sack or TFL in 8 weeks, Devonte Wyatt/Micah Parsons are on IR, and Lukas Van Ness is still very limited with the foot injury. This puts tons on the shoulders of guys like Kingsley Enagbare, Karl Brooks and Colby Wooden. Needless to say, it’s not an ideal place to be.
Caleb Williams torched the Packers in the second half of the previous game with out of structure and movement throws. He was effortlessly able to escape the pocket and find extra time needed to make key plays. Micah Parsons was the only Green Bay Packers defender that was able to make him sweat. Losing Micah is a critical blow for the overall speed from the Packers D-line. I do worry how Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams may be able to take advantage of that.
It’s clear this version of the Packers roster has some disadvantages. It reminds me of those Rodgers era teams I referenced earlier, but not near as severe. Also similar to those teams, I believe this version of the Green Bay Packers has a quarterback who can patch some of the holes. Jordan Love is ready to ascend to that role, and I am not the only one who believes that.
Say what you want about Orlovsky, but his analysis of quarterbacks has been spot on over the years.
If you are still hesitant to accept Jordan Love as an elite QB, then I don’t really know what to say to you at this point. Maybe try pulling the wool out from over your eyes. Not only does Love have one of the most aesthetically pleasing playstyles in the NFL, but every single number or advanced stat you could possibly find will back up his case.
- – He’s elite against zone coverage
- – He’s lethal against man coverage
- – He’s unstoppable against the blitz (big improvement this year)
- – He’s elite at avoiding sacks
- – He’s quietly one of the best QB’s in the league at not throwing interceptions
- – He’s been a stone cold killer on late 4th quarter drives
- – His accuracy that once was wayward is now among the best in the NFL
So, if you still haven’t accepted him as the guy, or if you still think he’s overpaid, then we really just shouldn’t be friends. Jordan Love is one of the very best QB’s in the league and you are only robbing yourself if you’re not on the bandwagon already. Don’t be a hater. Come join the fun side!
All of this is just to state my case that Love is good enough at this point. That he alone gives the Green Bay Packers a chance. The Bears have definite advantages in the game today, but they don’t have one at quarterback. Caleb Williams is good, and he’ll likely continue to improve, but he does not approach the level of Jordan Love in 2025. That alone could be enough, and the Packers may have to hope that it is.
The Packers have found late season success for decades by throwing elite quarterback play on top of a patchwork roster like a piece of flex tape to a leaky pipe. I am not saying that’s the only way out for them in 2025. I am just saying I think Jordan Love is good enough to be that type of solution for them, and I really can’t wait to be right. GO PACK GO!
