Just yesterday, the Green Bay Packers traded Dontayvion Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles. What does this mean for the wide receiver room moving forward?
Dontayvion Wicks was drafted by the Packers in the fifth round of the 2023 draft. Since then, he has only eclipsed 500 receiving yards in one season, his rookie season.
Wicks struggled mightily with drops in his sophomore season. With 39 catches, 415 yards and five touchdowns, he had eight drops. His drop rate was at 17% for that season.
In 2025, Wicks brought in 30 catches for 332 yards and just two touchdowns. He had three drops on the season. With Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Wicks and new addition Skyy Moore all set to be free agents after next season, the wide receiver room needed thinning.
This move makes a lot of sense considering the Packers drafted Matthew Golden in the first round of the draft last year. It’s also worth noting that Savion Williams, another wide receiver drafted last year by Green Bay, will likely benefit from this trade too.
In exchange for Wicks, the Packers received a 2026 5th round pick along with a 6th round pick in 2027. The odds that Green Bay would have resigned Wicks after his rookie contract were thin, so getting any kind of draft capital was a good move.
This move likely means that general manager Brian Gutekunst will select a wide receiver in this upcoming draft as there are now only five receivers on the roster.
The departure of both Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks means more opportunities for the other wide receivers still in Green Bay.
This move likely benefits Matthew Golden the most who was overshadowed last year during his rookie season due to injuries along with the presence of Watson and Reed.
Gutekunst stated, “…I’m really excited to see where he goes in Year 2. Obviously, he was a third-year player coming out of college – one year at Texas, two years at Houston. So, I think his ceiling is very, very high…”
So, all in all, this was a very smart move by the Packers. Wicks was a good receiver, but he wasn’t getting resigned in an already crowded room and it was better to get some capital for him now than let him walk in free agency next year with nothing to show for it.
More opportunities are on the horizon for the other pass catchers such as Watson, Golden, Reed and even a healthy Tucker Kraft.
