After hosting the NFL Draft last offseason, the Green Bay Packers won’t be welcoming a new player into the fold until the middle of the second round on Friday. That new player will come via pick fifty-two, a selection that was most recently used in Packers history for a very memorable pass catcher, Super Bowl champion Greg Jennings.
As Green Bay prepares for its time on the clock, here’s a look back at Jennings’ Packers career.
The Last 52
When the Green Bay Packers hand in their draft card at pick fifty-two on Friday, they can only hope to replicate the success they garnered from their last selection at that slot, which came by way of former wide receiver, Greg Jennings.
The Western Michigan was selected by Green Bay with the 52nd pick in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft, and he was quick to succeed on the gridiron.
As a rookie, Jennings was named a starting receiver alongside fellow Packers legend Donald Driver, producing 45 catches for 632 yards and three touchdowns, which was good enough for the all-rookie team.
One of those three touchdowns was also former quarterback Brett Favre’s 400th, which would start a streak of franchise-defining touchdowns that were caught by Jennings during his career.
Jennings also went on to catch Favre’s 420th and 421st career touchdown passes in 2007, which tied and broke Dan Marino’s all-time passing touchdowns record at the time.
Later that season, Jennings would also haul in the first career touchdown thrown by another Green Bay Packers great, Aaron Rodgers.
From 2008-2010, Jennings compiled three straight thousand yard seasons, marking the most productive stretch of his career.
That stretch culminated with one of the Packers’ most important Super Bowl XLV performances, in which Jennings supplied four catches for 64 yards and two touchdowns in route to hoisting Green Bay’s latest Lombardi trophy.
Although Jennings’ relationship with the Packers’ faithful soured toward the end of his career, mostly due to his signing with the rival Minnesota Vikings, the former Super Bowl champion will always have a place in Green Bay’s history.
Jennings was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 2022 alongside linebacker Tim Harris, and he still ranks top ten in all-time receiving yards for the team, with his 6,537 yards putting him in 9th place.
When the Green Bay Packers make their newest selection later this week, they’ll be thrilled if they come away with another player of Jennings’ impact.
The Green Bay Packers Are Now On The Clock…
Heading into this year’s festivities, Green Bay will have a multitude of options when it comes time to make the pick.
Considering the recent trade of Dontayvion Wicks, the Packers could opt for a wide receiver, similar to their selection of Greg Jennings in 2006.
Popular names at the position include Bryce Lance and Ted Hurst, but 52 might be a reach for both of them.
As it stands, it seems far more likely that Green Bay will make an addition along the defensive line, or in the cornerback room, with the offensive line in contention as well.
Personally, I think its time that the Packers make a real investment at corner.
As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, the current situation in that room isn’t conducive to a Super Bowl, and Green Bay has paid the price for its neglect of the position since Jaire Alexander’s decline.
If the past few years are anything to go by however, the Green Bay Packers’ pick might as well be a wildcard.
Thankfully, there’s not much time left to wait.
