With training camp less than ten days away for the Green Bay Packers, there’s not much left to speculate on.

Players will be hitting the field soon, and from there, it will be a crash course, with all signals pointed toward Super Bowl LXI.

Last week, the Packers elected to extend one of their own prior to the start of that quest.

The Value in Depth

This past Monday, the Green Bay Packers signed linebacker Isaiah McDuffie to a one year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the end of the 2027 season.

This move wasn’t one that seemed like it was guaranteed to happen, but considering the team’s current defensive makeup, committing to McDuffie for another year makes sense.

McDuffie was drafted by the Packers in the sixth round out of Boston College in 2021, and he’s been a relatively consistent backup since, starting occasionally when former linebacker Quay Walker was injured.

While the Packers have drafted other talents since, namely Ty’Ron Hopper, McDuffie has continued to fight off those additions to remain on the roster, and I think that speaks to his grit and role on the team as a secondary piece.

His most important contributions will come on special teams, where he played a career-high 302 snaps last season, and as new Packer Zaire Franklin gets acclimated, McDuffie will be a serviceable backup plan.

At the end of the day, he should continue to fill the holes that Green Bay needs him to.

The drop off in play was significant when McDuffie replaced an injured Edgerrin Cooper in the playoff loss to Chicago, but hopefully, that isn’t what the team will be needing from him very often this season.

He has a respected voice and a good bout of experience, and that’s where the value will come.

When asked how the team will function in the early season in the absence of Micah Parsons, McDuffie told Ian Rapoport that Green Bay should have “…everything we need…” and that it should be “…all hands on deck.”

With how the Packers struggled to finish last season, it’s important that that mentality stays sharp.

According to McDuffie, there’s an “…expectation to produce…” and hopefully, this young defense will benefit from that more seriously this go around.
