Last weekend, Green Bay traveled to Tampa Bay in search of a win that would bring their record back to .500. The Packers managed to find a win, but it would cost them their elite linebacker who is now out for the season.
The string of bad luck continues for Title Town. Packers linebacker Edgerrin Cooper suffered a torn Achilles tendon. After attempting to propel himself forward once the ball was snapped, it was evident that Cooper’s injury was non-contact.
Cooper showed the classic signs of an Achilles rupture, and the reaction from the players gave it away that the injury was likely significant. Cooper is arguably the heart of the Packers defense. So where does this leave the team?
Yes, the Packers with a win against a winless Tampa Bay. On Sunday, they will face the Chicago Bears at home. Edgerrin Cooper being out for the season is a huge hit, and it could impact the remainder of the season heavily.
The football Gods have not been kind to the Green Bay Packers as of late. Between Micah Parsons last season, wide receiver Jayden Reed this season, guard Zack Bako-Bewele and now Cooper, there isn’t much to look forward to right now.
Packers center Sean Rhyan had a perfect statement regarding the recent luck, “We’ve been kind of hit with some type of curse, it seems like.” I’m sure that’s how most fans feel at this point.
It feels as if this team has operated on potential for so long. There are such good players on the roster but between injuries and the classic collapses on the field, this team just can’t put it together.
Yes, injuries are a part of the game. The Packers are not the only team suffering from them, but this injury seems like the team won’t be able to recover from. At least not this season, and there is no guarantee Cooper ever returns to his previous form.
Cooper was on his way to a remarkable season. Against Tampa Bay, the 2024 2nd round pick had nine tackles, a sack and an interception. On the season, Cooper totaled seven tackles for loss and three sacks.
Cooper was the glue that held the defense together in the absence of Micah Parsons. Now? It’s Isaiah McDuffie’s turn. McDuffie is an experienced linebacker but he’s no Edgerrin Cooper.
One can remember the impact the loss of Micah Parsons had on the team last season. It’s hard to imagine that this will be any different. The Bears come to town Sunday and have scored a ton of offensive points.
Then Dallas comes to Lambeau the following week and then the Packers travel to Detroit. A brutal schedule to play without one of your best players. Despite the loss, this Packers team was as undisciplined and as sloppy as ever.
It would have been a difficult stretch regardless, but the loss of Cooper might be the nail in the coffin for this team this season. Cooper seemed to be in good spirits despite the season-ending injury.
The elite playmaker posted a tribute on his social media saying “brb”, insinuating that he would be back soon. With time, the hope is that the linebacker will return next season similar to his previous form.
