The Packers set their 53 roster on Saturday. As we know, that is not going to be the final 53 man roster at the end of the season. During his press conference on Sunday, General Manager Brian Gutekunst said the roster was fluid.

On Monday morning, Gutekunst stood behind his words and continued shaping the roster. He waived Cornerback Herb Waters and put Wide Receiver and Jake Kumerow on IR, opening up 2 roster spots. Gutekunst then filled one of those spots by signing Linebacker Korey Toomer, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers. The Packers roster currently stands at 52.

The Packers desperately need depth at the Linebacker position. Starter Jake Ryan is out for the season, rookie Oren Burks is banged up and could potentially miss the opener. Gutekunst surprisingly cut Ahmad Thomas, who is now on the Indianapolis Colts practice squad.

Korey Toomer was a 2012 fifth-round draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks. He spent the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Charges, where he started 16 games and played in 28. During that time he recorded 118 tackles, two sacks, five passes defended, five forced fumbles and had an interception return for a touchdown. This offseason the 49ers signed him to a one-year deal to provide depth to their linebacking core.

Toomer should fit into coordinator Mike Pettine’s defense nicely. He has natural athleticism that should allow him to play a variety of roles in Pettine’s defense and that versatility should help the at both the inside and outside linebacker positions. He some speed as he can run the 40-yard dash in 4.53 seconds. Toomer is looking to make an impact and prove he is a player on the rise and his stats in LA weren’t a fluke. He should get that opportunity in Green Bay. It will be a crash course to learn the 3-4 defensive scheme that Mike Pettine uses and be ready for the prime time opener against the Bears.

This should be an interesting and exciting week in Titletown. It is opening week, which is always an exciting time. Add that it is also rivalry week, with the Packers kicking off their 100th season against the Chicago Bears in primetime on Sunday, and the anticipation has been ramped up. With the roster only at 52 players and GM Gutekunst deeming it “fluid”, I would expect several more player moves this week before the Packers kickoff on Sunday.

Relax. Enjoy the moment. Regular season football is back.
