Free agency is drawing near, and on March 13th, general manager Brian Gutekunst will be able to use roughly forty million dollars in cap space to possibly re-sign current players, and to fill some big holes on the roster. Lets dive in and take a look at some available free agents the Packers could potentially sign. Lets also note that some of the bigger names, could also be franchise tagged or re-signed by their own team.
Cameron Wake, 37, is a 10 year veteran playing at the defensive end position. In 146 games played he has 98 sacks, 360 combined tackles, 16 passes defended and is consistently giving the opposing quarterbacks hell in the pocket. He is a mauler in rushing the passer with tons of moves he can deploy on offensive lineman to cut through their blocks. If the Packers decide to overhaul their outside linebackers, they would be wise on getting a wise old veteran to bring some knowledge, and most importantly consistency to the position.
Brandon Graham, 31, edge rusher has notched 213 pressures over the past three seasons, and he is arguably the best bull-rushing edge defender in the NFL. Graham may never be a high sack total guy, but he impacts both the run and the pass at a high level. In 127 games played he has 42.5 sacks, 317 combined tackles, and 7 passes defended. Just like Wake, this would give the Packers a solid, dependable defender off of the edge.
Dante Fowler Jr, 24, is a edge rusher who has the potential to become an elite type of player at his position. Every year, there has been an improvement with Fowler, with his most recent game in the NFC championship being a prime example. In 47 games played he has 16 sacks, 83 combined tackles, and 6 passes defended. He may lack some strength and can’t shake out of his blocks frequently, but he is only 24 years old and has a lot of growth ahead of him. With the right coaching, this could be a great signing for the Packers, and may become an intrigul part of the defense for years to come.
