Last year Jordan Love proved that he was capable of being a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Furthermore, he proved that he could lead a very young hungry team.

The combination of those things led the a Packers to a very successful season last year.

Culminating in a playoff run and the Packers minutes away from making it to the NFC Championship.

Love heads into the 2024 season on the last year of his contract.

General manager Brian Gutekunst said in early February that he plans to talk to Love’s agents at some point in the off-season.

Although Love can’t sign a extension until May of this year.

There are some risks though if the Packers do decide to extend Love this year.

But at the same time there is a reward that could pay off in the long run.

The Risk of Extending Jordan Love

As well as Love played last year, there as still some questions as to whether or not he can keep up his performance.

Although Love was able to show consistency in his play, it wasn’t until late last season he started to show it.

Through the first 2 games in 2023 Love had 6 touchdowns and no turnovers.

But then he started to go through a slump beginning in week 3 against the Saints.

It wasn’t until week 11 against the Chargers that Love started to turn things around.

From there on Love started to play at a high level.

The risk here is that if the Packers do decide to resign Love this off-season, it might hurt them in the long run.

Some might say it’s a little too early to give Love an extension.

There is reason to believe that is true.

Why?

The Packers are basically basing this off of one season of play.

There is always going to be a risk that Love is just a one year wonder.

If you sign him to extension now, you risk the chance that he might just be that.

The Reward

As to any risk there is a reward if the Packers do extend Love.

If Love signs on for a big deal, lets say for 4 years, the Packers have basically locked in their starting QB.

And if Love continues his high level of play, it makes the Packers front office look like geniuses.

Think about how unstoppable the Packers would be.

They have a young team, centered around a rising star quarterback.

Remember, the Packers built this team around Love with Rookies last year that are probably on 3 or 4 year contracts.

To lock Love in for another 4 year would mean the team would grow with Love.

Ether that or the Packers make a run at the Super Bowl during those 4 years.

Then the Packers have time to give Jordan Love a even bigger contract.

Love would then be 29 by the time his contract is up and he would probably be in his prime by then.

Solution

The Packers can wait to see how Love will perform in 2024 and signed him to a deal by the end of the 2024 season.

That way the Packers don’t risk Love being that one year wonder.

If Love plays well enough in 2024 then he deserves that big pay day.

The Packers also don’t want to risk their possible franchise QB though walking in Free agency in 2025.

Perhaps the Packers front office knows that and will probably start talks with Love’s agent by midseason.
