Training camp began Monday, and some Packers are already making headlines. Notably, Rashan Gary is off to a great start in camp.

Rashan Gary will play defensive end in Jeff Hafley’s scheme, putting his hands in the dirt more often. Coming off a 9-sack season, Hafley’s aggressive system gives Gary the chance to elevate his game further.

Most reports from training camp highlight Green Bay’s offensive line struggling to block Gary. On Tuesday, Gary had 3 sacks in 4 plays.

After day 2 of camp, Gary was asked why the mindset differs under Jeff Hafley. “Hand in the dirt and not dropping back. It’s that simple,” he said.

Gary’s fast start to camp has been echoed by the entire defensive line group, which has been relentless in applying pressure. On Tuesday morning, Matt LaFleur spoke about the group’s performance: “I thought for the most part the D-line got the better of the offensive line through one day of practice,” he said.

Lukas Van Ness shared his thoughts on how the 4-3 scheme suits Green Bay’s defensive line: “I think this 4-3 style fits the guys we have in our room a lot better up front, and you’ve been able to see it the past couple of days,” said Lukas Van Ness at his locker. “We’ve been aggressive getting after the quarterback. Pads add a whole different part of the game, and it’ll be interesting to see in the coming days. But again, I think it’s a testament to the guys in our room and how hard we’ve been working. We have a goal in mind, and we’re getting after it.”

It’s worth noting that Rashan Gary played extensively as a defensive end at Michigan, which helped him solidify his status as a top 15 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Green Bay’s defensive line also features veteran Kenny Clark, coming off a career-high in sacks, along with young talents Devonte Wyatt and Karlo Brooks, who continue to improve. Preston Smith, a reliable starter, adds further depth. All this talent certainly makes Gary’s job easier.

With a month of training camp left, we hope Gary keeps making headlines. This season could be his best yet. He has the talent and support to make it happen.
