Back in 2020 Jordan Love was a quarterback tasked with being the possible predecessor to Aaron Rodgers.
For Love, he had to wait just like Rodgers did before him to get his chance to shine.
All that time waiting and learning from one of the best quarterbacks in the game.
But when the time came for Love to takeover the reigns at Quarterback there were still questions about him.
Would he perform up to the standard of what the Packers were hoping for?
How would he handle the pressure of being a starting QB?
In 2023 Love answered all those questions in 17 games and 2 playoff games.
For the performance he put up in one season, he was rewarded greatly.
Last Friday, Love became the highest payed Quarterback in NFL history.
He signed a massive 4 year contract worth 220 million dollars.
Why he is deserving of the contract extension
Some might think the contract is too much for someone like Jordan Love.
Basing the contract off of one season, some fans think the contract extension is coming too soon.
But take this into consideration.
Love clearly outperformed his rookie contract.
In fact he surpassed everyone’s expectations.
While Love and the Packers stumbled early in 2023 to a 2-5 start, it was the finish that impressed the Packers front office.
General Manager Brian Gutekunst put up a challenge for Love as he said Love has 10 games to show he could be Green Bay’s quarterback of the future.
In the last 8 Games Love threw for 16 touchdowns and one interception.
He led the team to 7 wins after the 2-5 start and got the Packers to the playoffs.
Furthermore, He lead the Packers to a playoff victory against one of the top ranked defenses in the league, the Dallas Cowboys.
He nearly led the Packers to an NFC Championship game against the NFC champion San Fransisco 49ers.
For a first year starter, that is a lot to put on your experience list.
Love has experienced more than most starting QBs have in the NFL.
His performance and stats say it all.
He is definitely deserving of this contract extension.
What this means for the Packers?
The Packers basically have secured their future for the next 4 years.
Is it worth it?
the short answer is yes.
The quarterback position for the Packers is the key to their team.
It has been this way going back to the Lombardi days.
The team wasn’t going to risk not paying their star QB and letting Love go into the free agent market in 2025.
Instead the Packers knew they had their guy.
The same guy that Brian Gutekunst believed can lead the team in 2020.
The same person that the team had confidence in, to trade away their Hall of Fame QB.
The Packers knew they had to pay Love top tier money and he is very deserving of it.
Patience pays off
As stated earlier in the article Jordan Love had to be patient.
Love had to wait his turn to start, and in turn the Packers had to be patient with Love.
Once Love got things going in 2023, the Packers knew their patience payed off.
The Packers had to also be patient with the development of this team.
Patience seems to be a common theme here in this article.
Hopefully this patience pays off even more for the Packers and Love with a Super Bowl championship.
