It is no secret that the Packers have depth at the wide receiver position. Over the past few days of camp, Romeo Doubs has received a lot of praise. Doubs seems to be the rising star of camp. However, just when that seems to be the case, the rest of the group steps up. On Wednesday, the depth at wide receiver prevailed.
In the team portion of practice on Wednesday, the offense received contributions from multiple wide receivers. Jordan Love was disturbing the wealth. The Packers offense benefited from big plays from Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, and Dontayvion Wicks. That is the recipe for success. One lethal option can be taken away by elite defenses but multiple deadly options is awfully to difficult to stop.
The depth was on display in multiple ways. The group showed their flash in the short, medium, and deep passing game. Love hit Watson for a 40 yard reception. Wicks and Reed showcased their ability to make plays in the middle of the field. Doubs continue to dominate his one on one battles against CB Jaire Alexander. In the two minute drive portion for the first team offense, Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks led the way.
Depth Creates Options
Towards the end of the Rodgers era, it appeared his preference for Davante Adams became costly at times. In the 2021 Divisional Round against the 49ers in Green Bay, Rodgers was glued to Adams. He appeared to miss multiple open wide receivers. In a big game, it makes sense to rely on your stars. However, sometimes that is not the answer.
There is certainly a chance that one of these young wide receivers develops into a top notch player. At the moment, it is all hands on deck. Jordan Love does not seem to play favorites which helps. The depth gives Green Bay a competitive advantage. It will allow the Packers to create mismatches. The most exciting part is these guys are all cool headed and seem to root for one another. Just think back to the video of Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs greeting Bo Melton in the tunnel postgame in Minnesota last year. It was pure joy and excitement for Melton.
Green Bay has rotated Watson, Reed, Doubs, Wicks, and even Melton pretty consistently throughout camp during the team periods. This will be beneficial throughout the season. The more reps, the chemistry these players can build will help the offense run efficiently. Take the wide receiver depth over the star player. It counterbalances injuries and gives LaFleur and Love multiple weapons. Attacking defenses with a versatile, deep wide receiver core makes the offense multidimensional. That is exactly what Green Bay wants.
