I somehow feel more confident in the Green Bay Packers run defense than the secondary.
That is probably the wildest sentence I’ve written in an article thus far. It’s hard to believe that it’s the case, but coming out of last week’s game against the Lions it’s undeniable. I’m not by any means stating that it’s a lockdown front, but they certainly got the job done holding David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs in check.
Run Defense Steps Up
Coming into the contest last week I expected it to be a showdown of Jacobs & Wilson vs Sonic & Knuckles. Instead I bore witness to the same ol’ secondary coming in to stink up the joint. It is becoming harder to watch the game when I see #21 and #25 lining up across from opposing wideouts.
Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers held the NFL’s #1 offense to 76 rushing yards on 20 attempts with an average of 3.8 yards per carry. I know I know, they had rushing TDs, but that limited production by an opposing offense is what we’ve been looking for.
Secondary Woes Continue
I feel like week after week I’m calling out the same issues with this defense. I do not believe it’s a scheme issue. I am more than satisfied with the coordination Hafley has brough to the table. Unfortunatley, at this point, it seems more so that we are watching the team polish a turd. With Jaire Alexander still working to return, Valentine being inconsistent, and Nixon & Stokes just plain stinking up the joint, I don’t believe this secondary can stack up for a deep playoff run
There’s no magic fix either. It’s not as if there’s some amazing free agent waiting to come and wreck house. For now, The Green Bay Packers will need to find a way to get by with the current roster, but I am still confused as to why we are not seeing some of the youth get a shot. I certainly don’t believe that we would see a drop in play quality from Stokes at this point especially.

The Window Is Closing
I loved this post game presser from QB1 last week:
The mentality is there, and I absolutely think this team is bonded, but I just don’t see how they can contend as of now.
As a true homer fan I will never say they have 0 chance. However, it’s hard to see how this secondary will withstand a deep playoff run.
That being said, I will 100% revel in this newfound stout defensive front. With multiple goal line stops this season, it’s been great to see a more aggressive run defense.
How we ended up in the timeline where the Lions are atop the league and I’m pinning my hopes to the run defense of the Packers, is beyond me.
The Path Forward
This weekend the Green Bay Packers will square off against the Seattle Seahawks. I firmly believe this is a winnable game, but not one to be taken lightly by any stretch. I have full confidence in Green Bay’s ability to hold up this rushing attack. What will be more important to see, is how the secondary holds up against our collective former draft darling Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
JSN has been looking amazing, and you can never look passed DK Metcalf.
Hopefully we will see Ja$ out there welcoming JSN to strap city. I also wouldn’t mind seeing some more Xavier McKinney turnovers.
If the secondary can step it up, I think it’ll be close but a Packer victory none the less. I believe we’ll see a final score of 27-24.
