There is not a lot of debate when it comes to what Green Bay needs this offseason. Even before the last few games any one would have said that a pass rusher and corner would be a priority.
After Christian Watson’s devastating injury, wide receiver has also jumped to the top of the list. It’s not just Watson though. Reed and Wicks have had serious drop issues. Romeo Doubs has to be concerned with multiple concussions in the same season.
Now that we’ve identified those three weaknesses, how might Green Bay go about attacking those spots?
Cornerback
Free Agency/Draft
I think there is a real chance that Brian Gutekunst tackles corner with the same process that he fixed the safety room with last offseason. Sign one free agent and then draft multiple players at the spot. Jaire Alexander seems to be on the way out, making a thin group already thinner.
DJ Reed is the obvious choice. He grades well in multiple advanced metrics and has been a good player on a good defense for several years. Bringing him in would automatically add a solid veteran presence to replace Alexander.
If not Reed then who? While Gute did say after the season that the team needed to up its urgency in competing for a championship, I don’t know that he’ll abandon his strategy of adding younger players.
With that in mind I could see the team targeting someone like Asante Samuel Jr. His 2024 campaign was a disappointment to be sure, but he is only 26 years old and has shown flashes of excellent play his first few years in the league.
Regardless of who the free agent ends up being I think Green Bay adds multiple corners in the draft.
Wide Receiver
Free Agency
Do you need a star WR1 to win a Super Bowl? Probably not. But you do need reliable targets that can go out and make plays for your QB. Green Bay has spent multiple draft picks over the last two years building a wide receiver room they hoped could be that. While it’s too early to write off any of those players none have been what you’d call reliable on a week to week basis.
I could see Green Bay going one of two paths. The first is to sign a big name player at top dollar. There’s really only one name that fits the bill – Tee Higgins. While Higgins has missed time over the last two seasons (the same amount of games as Watson in fact) he missed very little playing time his first three years in the league. What can’t be denied is that when he’s on the field he produces. Higgins is also only 26, the type of player that Green Bay has preferred with many of Brian Gutekunst’s bigger signings.
The other path is more complicated. It requires the New York Jets to no longer want the services of Davante Adams. Assuming that they do cut him, it makes too much sense for Green Bay not to try and bring him back. I’ve seen pushback to this based on how the relationship ended the first time, but…
Also, if Kay Adams is involved, there is by my estimation at least a 20% higher chance that a free agent will be coming to Green Bay.
If Adams does come home, I wouldn’t be surprised if Green Bay brought back one more familiar name. Is that MVS’s music I hear?! If the Packers can bring him in for a low end vet deal, his ability to stretch the field would be a good band aid for the wound left with Watson’s injury.
Edge/Pass Rusher
Trade/Draft
This is the spot I have the least confidence in. Maxx Crosby’s name has been thrown out as a potential trade target with how his season ended and with former teammate Josh Jacobs suggesting he may make recruiting efforts.
I don’t see it happening based on how Gutekunst has operated in years past but it’s worth mentioning.
Over the last few days however I wonder if Green Bay decides to stick with a more traditional option. They may just opt to add through the draft. They might also be banking on a new defensive line coach getting more out of the investments they’ve already made.
Free Agent Wild Cards
Of course it’s also possible that Green Bay has other targets in mind with their cap space. Josh Myers is a free agent, and while the locker room loves him his play has been up and down. If he doesn’t come back Green Bay does have options on the roster, especially with former first rounder Jordan Morgan not having a settled spot. But that leaves a thin group even thinner, which we saw when Elgton Jenkins was knocked out of the Eagles game. If somebody like the Falcons Drew Dalman hits the market could he be an under the radar target?
The Packers have more options available to them then the last several years. This is a team that isn’t far off. Nail this offseason and there’s no reason Green Bay can’t be still playing this time next year.
