The offseason is in full swing at 1265 Lombardi Avenue. With the offseason brings many changes to the organization. One of the main things that changes every year is the coaching staff. Matt LaFleur has made three changes to the staff for the 2025 season thus far.
Rebrovich Out as Defensive Line Coach
The first coach to be let go was defensive line coach, Jason Rebrovich. While the Packers defense was the most improved unit, the lack of a pass rush was overwhelming. It felt like the Packers had pieces on the line to bolster a competitive pass rush. If the defense is improving, the pass rush cannot be left behind.
Letting go of Rebrovich was the right choice. A fresh perspective needs to come into that room. Nevertheless, Jeff Hafley’s defense is expected to take another jump as the players adjust to the scheme. Nevertheless, position coaches on the defensive side of the ball are at a premium this year. The Packers have conducted several interviews but have yet to hire a candidate.
Luke Getsy is Staying on for the New Season in a Full Time Role
Rumors of Luke Getsy returning to the Packers 2025 staff in some capacities have been confirmed. While Getsy spent some time with the Packers this season, he didn’t have an official title. LaFleur has brought Getsy on full time as a Senior Offensive Assistant.
Getsy is coming off unsuccessful stints as an Offensive Coordinator for both the Bears and the Raiders. However, it is hard to properly evaluate Getsy in those roles when the organizations he was coaching in were far from stable. What Getsy can bring to the staff is his former experience being in the building and a perspective that has grown from his experience in different offensive roles.
Rich Bisaccia Has Been Extended
The last coaching move LaFleur has made is extending the contract of Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator, Rich Bisaccia. Bisaccia was a darling of the coaching cycle two seasons ago. However, the hire of Bisaccia at the time was praised by many, especially since he was coming off a successful Interim Coach stint with the Raiders.
Nevertheless, the hire of Bisaccia has been viewed as a colossal failure by many fans of the organization. The Special Teams unit has yet to take a jump where you can see massive improvement. The unit has been by far the most undisciplined, penalized and mediocre in the entire league.
It is hard to fully view what LaFleur sees in Bisaccia that the fan base does not. I do think Bisaccia could succeed just as an Assistant Head Coach. However, it seems Bisaccia has too much on his plate. A clear and more defined role for him would make more sense. If the Packers are planning to seriously compete, coaching is important. It is the one thing that will truly take this team over the hedge.
There is only one thing we can do to see the results of these hires, and that is to wait. We truly will not know if Matt LaFleur made the correct decisions until we see it play out in the season. One thing is for sure, LaFleur’s track record of hires have been either massive hits or massive misses. The Packers can’t afford any more misses, especially now that the Super Bowl window is open.
