With the Super Bowl coming up this week, I wanted to take a look at the Packers history in the Super Bowls, and one Super Bowl stands out to me, on that I call the Forgotten Super Bowl.

It’s one that most, people don’t want to remember and for good reason.

Furthermore, it was opportunity for the Packers to do something that is rarely done.

The opportunity was to win back to back championships.

Super Bowl XXXII was supposed to be a lock for the Packers.

Coming off a championship season the year before, the Packers were riding hot into Super Bowl XXXII.

Brett Favre was coming off yet another MVP season, and the Packers had a 13-3 record.

With Playoff victories over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the top seeded San Fransisco 49ers, the Packers had all the confidence in the world.

Only one team stood in the way.

The Denver Broncos.

Super Bowl XXXII

11 point favorites.

That was the line for the Packers as they took on the Broncos.

That favored the Packers and for good reason.

One they were the defending Super Bowl Champions.

And two the NFC had 13 game win streak against the AFC in the Super Bowls.

Unfortunately for the Packers, the Broncos used that as motivation going into the game.

The Game

The game got off to a good start for the Packers as they scored right away on the opening drive taking the lead 7-0.

That was the only time the Packers had the lead.

From there turnovers and the Packers inability to stop Super Bowl MVP Terrell Davis doomed the Packers.

The Broncos went on to score 17 unanswered points, 7 of those point coming off a interception of Favre on the second possession.

The Packers were able to close the gap before halftime 17-14.

In the second half, it was a back and forth contest.

The Packers were able to tie the game at 17.

Again though the Broncos were able to take the lead back on a Davis 1 yard touchdown to take the lead 24-17.

An Antonio Freeman touchdown tied the game at 24 before the Broncos took the lead back late in the 4th Quarter.

With the game on the line Favre drove the Packers to the Broncos 35 yard line, but the offense stalled and the Broncos went on to win their first Super Bowl ever.

The Legacy of Super Bowl XXXII: The forgotten Super Bowl

Most will remember Super Bowl XXXII as the first Super Bowl John Elway won.

Others will remember it as the start of the Broncos dynasty in the late 1990s.

For the Broncos, they were able to win back to back Super Bowls in 1997 and 1998.

For Packers fans though, most would like to forget that this ever happened.

Hence the title, the Forgotten Super Bowl.

Kind of like Lombardi’s first loss in the NFL Championship game in 1960.

But the truth of the matter is that it did happen and it started a domino affect for the Packers.

Although they were good in 1998 going 11-5, they lost in the first round of the Playoffs against the 49ers.

Then came the playoff drought from 1999 through 2000.

It wasn’t until 2001 that the Packers reached the playoffs again.

In fact it took the Packers 14 years until they went back to the Super Bowl.

So the legacy of this game for Packers fans is that this is the Forgotten Super Bowl.

But it was there for the Packers to take in Super Bowl XXXII.

A dynasty, multiple championships, gone in 3 hours.

The same thing is there for the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday as they try to chase history.

But just remember any thing can happen, any Sunday, as the 1997 Packers learned nothing is guaranteed.
