It has been a while since the Packers drafted a Wide Receiver in the first round of the NFL Draft.
in fact, it is very rare that the Packers drafted a receiver in the first round.
In the storied history of the Packers, the team has selected a wide receiver in the first round just five times.
With the NFL draft coming up soon, we’ll look at the last Wide Receiver drafted in the first round by the Packers.
The 2002 NFL draft
Javon Walker stay in Green Bay was long by any means.
But he is the answer to the question of “Who was the last WR taken in the First Round by the Packers?”
The pick happened in the 2002 NFL draft and for good reason the Packers drafted a WR.
During the 2002 offseason, the Packers were working towards re-vamping their WR room.
Long time receiver Antonio Freeman left in Free Agency, while fellow Receiver Bill Schroeder left for the Lions.
To make matters even worse slot receiver Corey Bradford left for the Texans.
This left the Packers will an inexperienced Wide Receiver room.
While the Packers traded for former Patriots WR Terry Glenn, they were still looking for more at the position.
Mike Sherman, who was the Packers GM at the time, made a bold move to move up in the draft.
Sherman traded the 28th pick and 60th pick to move up 8 spots in the first round.
Walker was then selected with the 20th pick by the Packers.
Walkers time in Green Bay

As I mentioned before, Walker only spent 5 seasons with the Packers.
A pretty short time by Green Bay standards.
But Walker was very productive during his time as a Packer.
In his rookie season, Walker had 23 receptions for 319 yards and 1 touchdown.
Those numbers jumped in 2003 when he had 41 receptions for 716 yards and 9 touchdowns.
His breakout year came in 2004 when he had his first 1,000 yard season.
During that season, he had 89 receptions for 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Unfortunately for Walker, that was his peak season.
In 2005, the Florida State star tore his ACL in the season opener against the Lions.
This ended his 2005 season and Walker played his last down as a Packer.
The divorce
Walkers performance in 2004 sparked a contract dispute.
Although he was out for the majority of the 2005 season, Walker wanted a new contract.
The only problem was, Mike Sherman wasn’t the GM anymore.
Ted Thompson replaced Sherman as GM and wasn’t willing to take a risk on Walker and his injury.
Instead during the 2006 offseason, Thompson traded Walker to the Broncos for a 2nd round draft pick.
That pick was used to draft Greg Jennings, who himself turned out to be a great WR.
While Walker had a decent first year with the Broncos, surpassing 1,000 yards in 2006, he never regained his 2004 form.
He spent 3 more seasons in the NFL after that and retired in 2009.
Conclusion
Since 2002, the Packers have made a living drafting Wide Receivers in the later rounds.
Especially in the second round.
Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Christian Watson, Jayden Reed.
All WR’s that made an impact in Green Bay.
But with the Packers needing help at that position, it could be the year the Packers break the streak.
But until then, you at least know the story of the last Packer Receiver drafted in the first round of the NFL draft.
