Coming into the 2025 offseason, the Packers knew they needed help at the Wide Receiver position.

Without a true number one receiver and with their current starting WR out with an injury, the Packers were left without a lot of options.

The question was though how and where were they going to get help at WR.

Free agency went by and while the Packers did sign veteran Mecole Hardman, the Packers needed more help.

The only option left was the NFL draft.

But history wasn’t on the Packers side.

It had been 23 years since the Packers last drafted a Wide Receiver in the first round.

But last Thursday night, the Packers front office decided it was the right time to break the trend.

Not only did the Packers draft a WR in the first round, but they doubled up and drafted another one in the 3rd round.

Matthew Golden

You could say the Packers were given a golden ticket, or golden opportunity in the 2025 NFL draft.

The Packers stayed put at the number 23 spot in the draft and Matthew Golden fell right into the Packers lap.

With the draft being hosted in Green Bay, the crowd patiently waited for Packers president Mark Murphy to announce the pick.

And the Packers didn’t disappoint, as Murphy announced the selection of Golden.

The crowd went crazy as Golden made his way to the NFL draft stage.

In Golden, the Packers have a WR who has everything you want in a number one receiver.

He has game changing speed, running a 4.30 second 40 time, the fastest of any WR during the NFL combine.

Golden also possess great hands, has the ability to run smooth routes and take the top off of opposing defenses.

His production and numbers in college were pretty good as well.

During his time at the University of Houston, Golden had 76 catches for 988 yards and 13 touchdowns in two years.

Golden then transferred to Texas for his final season where he continued to put up numbers.

Last year he had 57 passes for 987 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Savion Williams

In the third round of the NFL draft the Packers got more help at the Wide Receiver position.

Picking Savion Williams with the 87th pick, the Packers have someone who is a Swiss army knife.

Williams has the versatility to play both WR and Running Back, much like Pittsburgh Steelers running back Cordarrelle Patterson.

Last year Williams had as many rushing touchdowns as he did touchdown catches with 6 TDs.

With Williams, the Packers have the versatility to use him in a creative way on offense.

You can line him up in the backfield or play him at WR, which creates confusion to defenses.

But his size and power make him a interesting pick for the Packers.

What does this mean?

With the additions of Golden and Williams, the Packers seem to be looking to revamp their WR room.

This is almost similar to what they did in 2022 drafted Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs.

But with both on contract years, the Packers not only looked toward the present but the future as well.

Watson and Doubs might not be back in 2026, so not only will Golden and Williams help the Packers but they are insurance just incase.

Golden will have a chance to compete and make an impact right away as it is up in the air as to who will be the Packers starting WR.

Williams will also have the same opportunity as well and can also help in the kick return game as well.

Both offer different skillsets but together, they can help elevate the Packers Wide Receiver play in 2025.

It will be interesting to see how the Packers will use both Wide Receivers once the 2025 season rolls around.

For now though Matthew Golden and Savion Williams bring hope and excitement to not only the Packers offense but Packers fans as well.
