Van Ness though has been in the league for three year heading into his 4th year.
But the question remains whether or not Van Ness is ready to take on a bigger role.
Drafted in the first round of the 2023 draft, a lot of people questioned the pick, thinking the Packers picked Van Ness too soon.
Especially the fact that Van Ness never started in college and was more of a situational rusher.
Through his three seasons in Green Bay Van Ness has shown some flashes but the numbers just aren’t there.
8.5 sacks and 1 forced fumble through three seasons.
Not the numbers you are expecting from someone drafted in the first round.
But with Gary traded to the Dallas Cowboys, this give Van Ness a chance to not only start but to step up.
2026 outlook

Now is the time for Van Ness to step up.
The opportunity is there for him and he needs to grab it.
There is a reason why he was a first round draft pick and the Packers chose him.
He has the athletic ability and there is no doubt he is phenomenal shape.
They don’t call him “Hercules” for nothing.
The promotion of DeMarcus Covington could help Van Ness.
Covington used Van Ness all over the defensive line last year, letting him play not only outside but on the interior line as well.
In 2025 Van Ness played 40 snaps at DT out of the 310 defensive snaps.
And while he had career highs in pressures last year, his sack numbers aren’t there.
Last season Van Ness only had 1.5 sacks.
Van Ness will have to prove that he can play outside LB and on the interior to show his versatility.
Furthermore, with new Defensive Coordinator Jonathan Gannon moving back to the 3-4, Van Ness will have a chance to revert back to a rushing LB.
Conclusion
Lukas Van Ness needs to take advantage of the opportunity that is ahead of him.
He has all the tools and physical ability to be a star on defense but it hasn’t translated on to the football field.
If he doesn’t the chances of Van Ness signing a new contract in Green Bay will be slim.
