Over the past couple of years, I’ve examined which second-year players are ready to make the jump. This metaphorical “jump,” of course, means a significant increase in production and potentially a breakout season. However, this Packers team is so young that limiting this list to only second-year players would be disingenuous. So this year, I’m expanding it to include any player on the roster who could take a major leap.

Last year, I had four players on my list: Jordan Morgan, Edgerrin Cooper, MarShawn Lloyd, and Evan Williams. I’d say I hit on two of those four. MarShawn Lloyd hasn’t been able to stay healthy and, honestly, is a candidate again this year—but I can’t fully buy in until he proves he can stay on the field. I really hope he does, because he has Pro Bowl running back potential written all over him.

Other names I mentioned included Ty’Ron Hopper and Kitan Oladapo, both of whom could still break out this season as well.

But enough about last year—let’s get into this year’s candidates.

Packers Players about to Make the Jump – Matthew Golden

This is probably the most obvious choice. Last season, Matthew Golden recorded 29 receptions for 361 yards and zero touchdowns in the regular season. However, in the Wild Card round against the Bears, Golden had a breakout performance, catching four of five targets for 84 yards and his first touchdown.

The issue last season was opportunity. The receiver room was crowded, and Golden couldn’t consistently get on the field. That should change this year. The Packers lost Romeo Doubs in free agency to the Patriots and traded Dontayvion Wicks to the Eagles, clearing up the logjam. Now, Green Bay will roll out Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and Matthew Golden as its primary receivers.

Golden will have his chances—and he has the talent to capitalize.

Jordan Morgan

Yes, I had Morgan on this list last year—but I’m going back to the well.

In my opinion, Morgan was played out of position for much of last season. When he finally got an opportunity at tackle after Zach Tom went down, he began to show real promise. With Rasheed Walker gone in free agency, Morgan now has a clear path at left tackle.

Last year, I said, “If he wins a starting job, look out.” Well, he’s got the job. Now we’ll see what he can do with it.

Anthony Belton

Much like Morgan, Anthony Belton may have been miscast early last season. Once he settled in at right guard, things started to click.

It wasn’t perfect, but he improved with each opportunity. With a full offseason to develop at the position, Belton could take a meaningful step forward and solidify himself as a reliable piece on the offensive line.

Packers – Collin Oliver

Packers Collin Oliver

My final main breakout candidate is Collin Oliver.

I believe Oliver will serve as a rotational pass rusher and a key contributor on special teams this season. With Micah Parsons dealing with injury concerns and the overall youth in the edge room, Oliver should have opportunities to get after the quarterback.

He’s not likely to be an every-down player due to his size and run defense limitations, but in clear passing situations, his athleticism could shine. If used correctly, Oliver could rack up some sacks and become a valuable part of the pass rush.

Other Possible Breakout Players:

There are a couple of additional names worth watching.

Savion Williams is another strong candidate, largely for the same reasons as Matthew Golden. He’s an athletic, dynamic receiver who could see increased opportunities in a less crowded room.

Luke Musgrave is also worth mentioning. This is a contract year for him, and he hasn’t quite lived up to expectations as a former second-round pick. Tucker Kraft is currently the top tight end but is returning from an ACL injury, and the depth behind him is thin. If Musgrave can finally put everything together, he could be in line for a solid payday in next year’s free agency.

The Packers continue to stack this team with young talent and honestly it is why they are competitive year in and year out.

I’m excited to see what happens!
