When the Packers signed former Vikings DT Javon Hargrave, it was one that made sense for the team.

A veteran, who has experience and some familiarity with new Packers defensive coordinator Jonathon Gannon.

Hargrave just happened to be released from the Vikings and the Packers wasted no time in signing the 33-year old veteran.

The Packers will need some contribution from Hargrave as their defensive front is looking for someone other than Devonte Wyatt to create interior pressure.

Experience in Gannons defense

The one thing that Javon Hargave will bring is experience in Jonathon Gannons defense.

Hargrave played for Gannon in Philadelphia from 2020-2022.

During his time with Eagles, Hargrave had some of his best years.

He made his first Pro Bowl in 2021 when he recorded 7.5 sacks with the Eagles.

He improved in 2022 recording a career highs in sacks (11) and tackles for loss (10).

Now reunited with Gannon in Green Bay, Hargrave will best fit at the nose tackle position.

This is where he had the most success during his time in Philadelphia.

With Gannon playing a three man line, that would possibly push Devonte Wyatt over to the defensive end position.

It could also mean Wyatt and Hargrave splitting time as the Packers have Micah Parsons and Lukas Van Ness at the defensive ends.

Early season action

Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Javon Hargrave celebrates after recovering a fumble in the fourth quarter against the Jaguars. Eagles win 29-21 over the Jacksonville Jaguars at Lincoln Financial Filed in Philadelphia, Pa. on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022.

The impact of Javon Hargrave might be impactful but he may also be a role player as well.

As I mentioned earlier Gannon plays a three man line.

Both Wyatt and Hargrave play the nose tackle position exceptionally well.

But with Wyatt still recovering from a season ending broken ankle, Hargrave will have to fill in for Wyatt early in the season.

Which gives the Packers the chance to not rush Wyatt back.

Once Wyatt gets back though, they can rotate Hargrave in, making him a role player.

Being a veteran presence

For years the Packers have been one of the youngest teams in the NFL.

But for the first time we are seeing a shift in the roster building of the Packers.

Zaire Franklin and Javon Hargrave are players, while not in their prime still have some left in the tank.

Hargrave can serve on the veteran presence on the defensive line along with Micah Parsons.

He has the experience of making it to the Super Bowl and losing it, leaving him hungry for more.

With his guidance and experience, he can help the Packers defensive front from more than a playing perspective.
