We’re finally made it through the off-season and as the Packers start training camp this week.
With rookies reporting Yesterday and the veterans on today, excitement is in the air as football is back.
While the Packers have had a quiet off-season, the Packers did make some significant changes.
Specifically to their defense, as they are now coached by Jonathan Gannon.
Add to the fact their are some new players on that side of the ball, this defense is something to watch for as Training camp starts.
With that lets take a look at what to look out for as Training camp starts on the defense.
How will Jonathan Gannon scheme the defense
With the hire of Gannon, the Packers will be switching back to a 3-4 defense, the first time they’ve done that since 2023.
With a new scheme comes new positions, though it doesn’t require much change.
There will be questions though of who is going to play where, especially on the defensive line and inside linebacker position.
Who will be the play-caller on the inside linebacker position?
It’s a complete change from what Jeff Hafley schemed up while he was in Green Bay.
The philosophy and style though stays the same as both schemes are aggressive in their play.
But it will be interesting to see during training camp how the defense performs as they try to learn the defense.
They will have to learn quick if they want to be ready for the regular season.
Who will start at the book ends?
The Packers will start the season with two new ends on the line.
With Micah Parsons out for possibly the first few games and Rashan Gary traded to the Cowboys, the team will have to find someone to fill those roles.
For now it looks as if Lukas Van Ness and Brandon Cox will be starting.
But the Packers have young hungry players more than capable of stepping in and earning playing time.
Barryn Sorrell, Colin Oliver, Dani Dennis-Sutton and Aaron Mosby have an opportunity to step up.
Both Oliver and Sorrell could make that year 2 leap and have been working out with Parsons in the off-season.
It will be a competitive battle throughout training camp at that position and one to keep an eye on.
Cornerbacks
Perhaps the main concern this whole off-season was the Cornerback room.
While the Packers did all they could to improve the position through Free Agency and the draft, the question still remains.
As of now Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine are the starting corners.
But that can change very easily if ether of them fail to impress in training camp.
The Packers seem pretty high on Brandon Cisse, who they used a high draft pick on.
If Cisse has a good camp, he may earn playing time during the regular season.
The team also signed Benjamin St-Juste in hopes that perhaps he can step up as well to help the CBs.
If their is a position I’d keep an eye on during training camp on defense it is the Cornerbacks.
It is still highly a concern for the Packers and someone needs to step up and take control of the position.
While Nixon and Valentine are good corners, they need to prove they are starting corners.
Way too many times last year, we saw receivers running down the field open.
They’ll need to prove that they’ve learn from their mistake last year, or they risk being replaced on the depth chart.
