The Packers were sitting in the 12th highest waiver claim priority. After the Detroit Lions failed to trade Tight End Michael Roberts to the New England Patriots, they placed him on waivers.
On Monday, the Packers were awarded the rights to Roberts and he is now on their 90-man roster. The Packers now have 5 tight ends on their roster; Jimmy Graham, Mercedes Lewis, Jace Sternberger, Robert Tonyan and Roberts. We also can’t forget about Pharoah McKever, who the team claimed off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars. It is definitely a crowed position, but competition will hopefully bring out the best.
Roberts will have an uphill battle making the team, as I don’t see the team keeping 5 tight ends. I mean, they could, which then they would have to cut from another position. I see 4 tight ends being on the roster when opening day comes.
Roberts was drafted by Detroit in the fourth round of the 2017 draft. In two seasons with Detroit, Roberts had 13 receptions for 146 yards and 3 touchdowns. He rookie season, he spent considerable amount of time playing special teams. If you is going to make the 2019 Green Bay Packers, that is where he is going to make his impact.
His senior season at Toledo stands out, as he had 45 receptions for 453 yards and 16 touchdowns. During the NFL combine, he did run a 4.86 forty. He is also a tall tight end at 6’4 and weighs 270 pounds.
The size and talent are there, it’s just the matter of him putting it all together. The Packers roster now stands at 90 with training camp right around the corner.
