The right guard position will be up for grabs when training camp starts in late July. We could confidently take a guess at the starters for the other offensive line positions. However, who starts at right guard is anyone’s guess.
Two offensive line positions have their starters set: Zach Tom at right tackle and Elgton Jenkins at left guard. Josh Myers leads the battle at center, despite being an average pass-blocker and below-average run blocker. Rasheed Walker and Jordan Morgan will compete for left tackle. Morgan’s struggles in OTAs and minicamp, as expected, should give Walker an early lead.
The right guard spot could be filled by versatile players. If Walker wins at left tackle, Morgan might slide inside. However, Matt LaFleur has stated that Morgan’s career will begin at tackle. Jacob Monk has a lot of upside and could be Green Bay’s future starting center, possibly moving Josh Myers to right guard.
Sean Rhyan, Andre Dillard, Donovan Jennings, and Royce Newman are exclusively fighting for the right guard position. Can any of them fit into Matt LaFleur’s “best five”? Rhyan has shown flashes as a run-blocker but needs refinement in pass protection. Dillard, a veteran, had pass and run blocking PFF grades below 56.7 last year. Jennings, an undrafted rookie with good upside, could extend Green Bay’s streak of at least one undrafted rookie making the roster in the last 19 years. Newman has consistently struggled both physically and mentally since being drafted in 2021.
The Packers’ offensive line to start the season could be Walker, Jenkins, Myers, Morgan, and Tom. Expect Walker and Morgan to rotate at left tackle, and Morgan, Rhyan, and Dillard at right guard. However, the Week 1 starter at right guard is likely to be someone not solely competing for that spot.
Brian Gutekunst’s philosophy of O-line building in the draft prepares Green Bay for moments like this. The Packers have players who can play all over the line and will be ready when called upon. LaFleur and the coaching staff know they must protect their soon-to-be-paid star quarterback. They will field the best five players to ensure his protection.
