The tight end position is something the Packers have lacked success with.

For the longest time it seemed like it was the missing piece in the Packers offense.

The Packers have tried everything, from drafting high at Tight End, to spending big money in free agency.

None of that worked.

But last years draft gave some new life to the Tight End position.

Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft surpassed everyones expectations.

Furthermore, now the Packers have two tight ends that can do multiple things.

Which in turn, can make this offense dangerous.

Why two Tight Ends?

If you are a Packers history buff, you know the Packers have always had success with two tight ends.

But it all really starts with the type of offense you run.

For the Packers, the west coast offense has been a staple of the team since 1992.

When Mike Holmgren arrived in Green bay, the team already had two really good tight ends.

Ed West and Jackie Harris were quite possibly, the first dual tight ends here in Green bay.

And they fit perfectly into Holmgren’s offense.

Both were receiving threats and had the capability to block, a plus in the west coast offense.

It was helpful for the Packers because at the time they didn’t have a solid 2nd WR.

Putting two Tight Ends helped the Packers not only put two receiving threats, but two blockers as well.

Why it worked so well?

Defenses would mostly be confused as to whether or not to play the run or pass.

You would also have to decide who to put out on the field to cover the tight ends.

That in itself is a hard decision to make as well as you have to match the speed and size of the player.

For the Packers it worked out for them in the 1990’s.

Soon in 1995, the Packers had another pair of tight ends in Mark Chumra and Keith Jackson.

Once again, the Packers offense was dominant.

With MVP Brett Favre at the helm, the Packers offense passed their way to multiple NFC Championships and a Super Bowl victory.

Conclusion

Through out the NFL, you’ve seen the success of having two tight ends.

From the Packers to the Kansas City Chiefs, teams around the league are recognizing that the Tight End position is important.

To have two starting caliber Tight Ends is something special.

That is what the Packers have and are every fortunate to have.

The Packers are hopeful they can continue the tradition of having two good Tight Ends.
