The Packers and Seahawks hosted a joint practice on Thursday. Tempers flared, and the Packers defense seemed to struggle mightily against the Seahawks number one offense.

The Packers enter another season lacking an elite pass rusher as well as a standout corner. The addition of Nate Hobbs to the cornerback room will certainly help, but with little additions to the defensive line, will the Packers be in the same situation as last season?

While preseason joint practices are not extremely important, Sam Darnold led the Seahawk’s offense quite easily against the Packers first team defense.

One of the more concerning parts of practice for the Packers defense took place in the third down period. Out of the six plays the Seahawk’s offense ran, they were successful at gaining a first down on five.

The last play, Packer’s corner Kalen King was called for pass interference, which would result in a first down in real play. Overall, a very underwhelming performance from the Packers defense.

To add to the embarrassing performance by Green Bay’s defense, the Seahawks also had their way with them in the 7-on-7 redzone period. Quarterback Sam Darnold completed 5/6 passes for three touchdown passes.

Later on, during the full 11-on-11 redzone period, the run defense showed promise, but the passing defense still lacked any type of pulse and gave up two touchdowns through the air.

The two-minute drill was saved by Green Bay safety Evan Williams, who picked off Sam Darnold to give the defense their only win of the day.

Williams stated “Really, I was just reading the quarterback’s eyes off the rip and he kind of had a good tilt toward the boundary to my left.” The second-year safety will pair nicely with Xavier McKinney this year.

The Packers offense seemed to struggle with tempers, as offensive lineman Zach Tom was thrown out of practice after throwing a punch during a scuffle.

So, is this performance by the Packers defense concerning? Yes. Is it also worth noting they were without Nate Hobbs and Xavier McKinney, also yes.

Regardless of what the situation is, preseason or not, the Packers have failed to establish themselves as a legitimate threat over the last few seasons. The defense has to face some gnarly offenses this season.

Will this team establish themselves as an actual contender? Preseason is almost over, and the looming questions surrounding the team will be answered soon enough.
